WHY THE BARD FOCUS?

TMI why the focus on Shakespeare:
B/c his plays are the most produced. Held as the epitome of words and worthiness. B/c in his plays the Others including Women are so often silenced as Lesser Than. Because in our American world the Others including Women are so often silenced as Lesser Than. Because it’s all in the framing, the context, in how we learn to read. Because it’s the language of our lives. Because we if we wish our world and our children and ourselves to survive, we have to open our language’s eyes.

WELCOME TO THE ACADEMY,
a unique residential school run by gods where students are mainly State wards matriculated as infants and where Shakespeare’s works provide the primary source material. A sanctuary from The Outside where violence and oppression vs. The Other’d – everyone who is nonWhiteCisMale – reigns. Six of the students are Others. One of these Other’d students goes Outside to look for the Library. He's killed.

A brand-new shiny impossible first draft toy that has not yet been read aloud of a 2-act nonlinear nontraditional play on and with language – a celebration of women+’s writings* – in which 2 gods, 6 students and 4 players undertake a quest to save their mortals/mortally wounded words&world.

THE QUEST(ion):
Is it possible to find new ways to (literal&figurative) ‘write’ – expand our worlds’ ‘language’ – build bridges of communication and start healing our worlds & each other – before it’s too late?
Can our words change
and save our world?

*A LITERAL CELEBRATION OF WOMEN+ WRITINGS
Women+ Words Warriors’ names and the titles of one or more of their works are worked into the character’s dialogue as shout-outs or elsewhere in the play. Hopefully the names and titles will be projected during a hypothetical future production of the play.
Words can dream.
There’s AN APPENDIX OF WOMEN+ WORDS.
It’s supposed to be handed out to the hypothetical ‘never gonna happen b/c did we mention the play is impossible’ audience. Words can dream.
BTW "Women+" as a term is intended here to include folx who identify as female or NB (H/t Women+ in Theater - WiT - a FB group).
